The Small Blue Butterfly

The Small Blue Butterfly is the smallest butterfly in the UK. It may be described as the Allerdale butterfly as apart from a few sites in Workington and Maryport it is not found for over 200 miles! The food plant of the small blue is kidney vetch which like many wildflowers only grows on really poor soil where it is not outcompeted by grasses. This means that Small Blue butterflies are mostly found on Brownfield sites such as Oldside windfarm and on the old steelworks site in Workington
