Most of us associate Valentine’s Day with grand gestures, expensive gifts or extravagant date ideas - but really, the day is about sharing meaningful moments with those who matter the most. And luckily for us Workington folk, we have plenty of Valentine’s Day date options right on our doorstep.
From brisk coastal walks and wildlife spotting in our nature reserves to candlelit dinners and cocktails in the town centre, you don’t need to break the bank to share a memorable day with your favourite person!

Romantic Walks Close to Home
Workington’s Coast
Longingly staring out to sea, windswept hair, dramatic clouds - what could be more romantic than a coastal stroll on Valentine’s Day!
You’ve got plenty of trails to pick from, with the Stone Domed Hut Loop being a local favourite. Starting along Town Quay, near Vanguard Sailing Club, the 3.4-mile route takes you past the Stone Domed Hut, with views across Solway Firth, before heading southward, where on a clear day you’ll catch glimpses of the Isle of Man and Scottish coastline.

Harrington Nature Reserve
If you’re after a shorter walk but still looking to enjoy some of Workington’s wild side, then Harrington Nature Reserve might just do the trick. Accessible to all (weather dependent), the 1-mile route crosses woodland as well as views of the reservoir. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, with plenty of animals calling the area home, from Mallards to dragonflies to toads.
Siddick Ponds
Talking of wildlife, if you and your partner spend your evenings binge-watching David Attenborough docs, a walk around Siddick Ponds can’t be missed!
During the winter months, you’ll likely spot birdlife like goldeneyes, tufted ducks and the fantastically named shoveller whooper swan. And if you’re very lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of Siddick Ponds elusive otter residents hunting for fish or floating about on their backs.
A Short Drive to the Lakes
One of the great perks of living in Workington is being on the doorstep of the UK’s best national park - we might be a bit biased, though! Just 30 minutes down the road and you’ll soon be somewhere romantic like Loweswater. And thankfully for us, this side of the Lake District avoids the crowds of Windermere, Ullswater and co, so you and your loved one can wander in peace.

Date Night Ideas in Town
After all that fresh air and exercise, it’s only right to head into town for a romantic evening together. Here are some options to consider!
Local Eats
In and around Workington Town Centre, you’ll find plenty of places to eat. Whether you go classic with fish and chips, grab some sharing plates with a bit of everything or warm up over a spicy curry, you’ll find something for all tastes and budgets here.
Out for Drinks
There’s no reason your date night has to end early either. With Valentine’s Day landing on a Saturday this year, why not head out for a drink or two after dinner? From sharing a couple of cocktails to cosying up in one of our local pubs, what better way to celebrate the special day.
A Classic Cinema Date
If none of the previous options tickle your fancy, you can always rely on a trip to the cinema. And luckily for us, we have two to choose from: the Ritz Cinema in town and Parkway Cinema up in Dunmail Park. The only hard part is agreeing on which movie to watch! But thankfully, both Parkway and the Ritz screen all sorts of genres from rom-coms to thrillers to rereleased cult classics.
And for those who don’t have someone to share this Valentine's Day with, a solo cinema outing can be just the ticket!

Why Loving Local Matters
Choosing to stay local for Valentine’s Day has benefits that go beyond convenience for you and your partner. Supporting independent businesses, enjoying local green spaces and spending time in the town centre all help contribute to a stronger community. These are the places that give Workington its character and keep it feeling lively throughout the year.
It also takes the pressure off. Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be perfect or expensive to be meaningful. Often, it’s the little moments - a walk along the coast, a shared meal, a good conversation - that people remember most.
So whether you’re celebrating as a couple, heading out with friends or taking some time for yourself, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the day in Workington.
From all of us at Workington Town Council, we wish you a lovely Valentine’s Day, whatever you’re doing and whoever you’re spending it with!
