A new chapter for a much-loved space in Vulcan Park

Tucked inside Vulcan Park, the newly refurbished Park End Shelter is ready to welcome the community once again.
Originally built in 1937 as an ‘Old Man’s Shelter’, the shelter was created following donations from Helena Thompson. At the time, it offered a simple but important purpose: a warm, sheltered place where the gentlemen of Workington could gather, chat, read the newspaper and relax.
Nearly 90 years on, that same spirit of community is at the heart of the building’s next
chapter.
From 1937 to today: why this kind of place matters
When the ‘Old Man’s Shelter’ was built, Workington was a town shaped by industry and working life. Communities were close-knit, and local spaces mattered. People needed places to pause, talk, share news, and feel connected to their neighbours.
Workington’s story stretches back much further, of course. The area has long been linked with the coast, the River Derwent, and a proud local identity. Even the name ‘Workington’ is thought to come from Anglo-Saxon roots, describing a settlement connected to ‘Weorc’ and his people.
But it’s the everyday history that often feels most familiar: generations of local people using shared spaces, looking out for each other, and building community spirit in the process.
A building brought back to life
Over the years, the original building fell into disrepair. This January, renovation works commenced to restore the building and reimagine its purpose for modern Workington.
The result is Park End Shelter: a bookable space for all people, designed with workshops and events in mind.
The shelter has been renovated to once again serve as a hub for locals, encourage and strengthen community spirit, and bring people together. It’s a practical space, but it’s also something more than that: it’s a signal that community-focused projects matter, and that local places can be protected, improved, and enjoyed.
What Park End Shelter is for
Park End Shelter is intended for activities that benefit local people, with a focus on:
Health
Sustainability
Creativity
Wellbeing
That could mean a small workshop, a community meet-up, a wellbeing session, a creative group, or a local project bringing people together around a shared goal.
If you’ve been looking for a simple, welcoming space to run an activity that supports the community, Park End Shelter could be a great fit.
Bookings are now being taken
Bookings are now open for Park End Shelter.
Anyone can book the shelter. It is also available free of charge to voluntary and non-profit organisations, and booking priority is given to those offering activities which align with Workington Town Council’s 5 Year Plan Objectives.
If you’re part of a community group, charity, or local organisation and you have an idea for an event or workshop, we’d love to hear from you.
A space shaped by local people
The most meaningful community spaces are the ones that get used.
Park End Shelter is here for the people of Workington. Whether you want to host something new, bring an existing group into a fresh setting, or trial an idea that supports local wellbeing, this is an opportunity to make use of a shared space in the heart of Vulcan Park.
And if you remember the building from years gone by, you’ll know it has always been about more than bricks and timber. It’s about having somewhere to meet, to talk, and to feel part of the community.
